Meeting Description:

The Westminster Forum for Languages and Linguistics and the Department of
English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies are pleased to announce a training
workshop on developing pathways to impact for early career researchers (ECRs)
in bi-/multilingualism and education, to be held at the University of
Westminster on 2 December 2017.
 
The aim of the workshop will be to illustrate how research into bi-/
multilingualism can generate positive change in policy and practice with an
emphasis on education, and to invite ECRs to develop ideas on how their work
can generate pathways to such types of impact. It will include three types of
training sessions led by senior researchers who are members of the Peer Review
Colleges of the AHRC and the ESRC and have proven track records of large-scale
public engagement and impact-generating activities in the fields of
bi-/multilingualism, literacy and education:
 
1. Talks by senior researchers on their impact experience, showing how they
were able to create links between their research findings and demonstrable
cases of impact

2. Break-out sessions, during which ECRs will present their research with a
non-academic audience in mind, including ideas about how it can generate
economic and/or societal impact, and will receive feedback from senior
researchers and other ECRs

3. A round-table discussion on challenges and ways forward in pursuing the
impact of research.

Professor of Developmental Linguistics, University of Edinburgh, member of the
Peer Review College of the ESRC, director of Bilingualism Matters (keynote
speaker)

Associate Professor of Linguistics, Open University of Cyprus

Professor Li Wei
Chair of Applied Linguistics, UCL Institute of Education
 
The workshop is open to 60 PhD students and ECRs within 10 years of the award
of their PhD. Participants will have an excellent opportunity to

- Consider in detail concrete examples of how scientific research on bi
-/multilingualism and bi-/multilingual education can make a demonstrable
contribution to society by positively changing the quality of life of
bi-/multilingual individuals and communities
- Develop their knowledge of current trends in academia in relation to impact
- Appreciate how important it is in the current climate for their research to
sit well within the political, social and economic context in which academia
operates
- Learn how to communicate academic knowledge to non-specialist audiences
- Apply their newly-acquired skills to their own research
- Receive advice on how to explore this new avenue for their work from senior
colleagues and other ECRs.

A small number of travel bursaries are available for participants who do not
currently hold an institutional affiliation or who do not have access to
financial support from their home institutions. If you would like to be
