 Institution/Organization: University of Konstanz
Department: Linguistics /Zukunftskolleg
Web Address: https://www.uni-konstanz.de/en/

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Philosophy of Language; Pragmatics; Semantics

Description:

Applicants are invited for two three-year doctoral positions within the Emmy
Noether Junior Research Group “What is it to ask a question? A formal
pragmatic investigation of interrogative force”, funded by the DFG (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft) at the University of Konstanz. (
http://www.sven-lauer.net/emmy-noether-group/ )

The project is hosted at the Zukunftskolleg (
http://www.uni-konstanz.de/zukunftskolleg/ ) and the Department of Linguistics
( http://ling.uni-konstanz.de/en) and is associated with the DFG research Unit
“Questions at the Inferfaces” (
http://typo.uni-konstanz.de/questionsInterfaces/ ). Funding is available for
PhD students to attend international workshops and conferences, and for an
extended research stay at a university abroad, which is intended to allow the
students to build an international network and to consult with recognized
experts on their research.

Each of the two successful candidates is expected to work within one of the
two subprojects “Rhetorical uses of interrogatives“ and “Infinitival and
practical interrogatives” of the research group (see
http://sven-lauer.net/emmy-noether-group/subprojects for details) and
undertake research towards a Ph.D. in linguistics. Expected starting date is
November 15th, 2017. A different starting date can be negotiated.

Requirements:

Applicants should have an M.A./M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in linguistics or
a related discipline (e.g., philosophy, logic or computer science) and should
specialize in formal semantics, pragmatics or related fields in their
discipline (e.g., the philosophy of language). Knowledge of German is not
required (but will be useful for navigating daily life in Konstanz). Due to
the international nature of the department, and the status of English as the
lingua franca in research, successful candidates must be able to communicate
in English.

The University of Konstanz encourages applications from people with a
disability. They will be given preference if appropriately qualified (contact

The University of Konstanz is an equal opportunity employer that tries to
increase the number of women in research and teaching.

The University of Konstanz is committed to further the compatibility of work
and family life.

The University of Konstanz offers a "Dual Career Couples Program". Information
can be obtained from: http://www.uni-konstanz.de/dcc.

Application:

The deadline of application is October 15th, 2017, but the search will
continue until the positions are filled. Applicants should submit a short
cover letter (2 pages max.) describing their background and why they are
interested in the position(s), a full CV and one sample of academic work (a
substantial term paper, a (draft of) a MA/BA theses, or a publication or
substantial manuscript). Please also indicate in the cover letter whether you
want to be considered for both positions/projects or only for one of them.
Please also provide the contact information for one person familiar with your
academic work who may be contacted (if necessary) for a letter of reference.
All materials should be sent in one message to Sven Lauer at the following
email address: sven.lauer at uni-konstanz.de. Please write ''PhD Positions Emmy
Noether Project" as subject of your email.
