Job Title: Professor of Linguistics
Job Rank: Rank Open

Specialty Areas: Semantics; Syntax

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester welcomes
applicants for two tenure track faculty positions. The appointment would begin
July 1, 2018. The position is open rank, with a preference for more senior
candidates. The two openings are in the areas of syntax and in semantics.

Applicants must have a record of excellence in both teaching and research. The
most successful applicants will have expertise in theory coupled with a strong
empirical orientation, employing empirical methodologies to examine data and
topics in contemporary issues and practices in linguistics. This may take the
form of active engagement in linguistic fieldwork, the application of data
sciences techniques to linguistic corpora, experimental investigation, or
computational methodology to name but a few. Evidence of an additional area of
expertise beyond syntax and/or semantics is most welcome and valued
(morphology, in-depth knowledge of a language family, sociolinguistics,
computational methods), to leverage existing research in or outside the
department.

A Ph.D. in Linguistics or in another closely-related area is required, however
a candidate should be able to teach core linguistics courses in a strong
undergraduate program and to contribute to Masters and PhD programs in
Linguistics grounded in cross-disciplinary, collaborative work, and
incorporating contemporary issues and practices.

The Department of Linguistics offers a Ph.D. Program, MA programs in
Linguistics and in Language Documentation and Description, a MS program in
Computational Linguistics (offered jointly with Computer Science), and a BA in
Linguistics. The department most highly values work which spans to other
departments and programs in the strong interdisciplinary language community at
the University of Rochester. The community is affiliated with the Center for
Language Sciences, which includes researchers interested in language and
cognition from several departments and programs across the University,
including Arts and Sciences, Engineering, the Medical School and the Eastman
School of Music.

For fullest consideration, a completed application should be submitted by 1
December 2017.
