University or Organization: University of Chicago

Job Location: Illinois, USA

Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Anthropological Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago is seeking to hire
a scholar whose research addresses language in its social context, broadly
construed. We are looking for a candidate whose primary research and teaching
will bring to our Department an intellectual perspective and set of tools that
enhance (and potentially complement) our existing strengths in experimental
linguistics, evolutionary linguistics, linguistic anthropology, language
contact, language endangerment and documentation, as well as syntax, semantics
and phonology. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing the
Department's language-in-society curriculum, and in sustaining our vibrant and
interdisciplinary community of language-oriented scholars and students drawing
from neighboring departments, including Anthropology, Psychology, and
Comparative Human Development.

A goal of the search is to increase the diversity of the Department of
Linguistics and we therefore welcome applicants who come from groups that are
historically underrepresented in the disciplines noted above, such as
black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native.
Successful candidates will be appointed as a tenure-track faculty member at
the rank of Instructor and, during the first two years of appointment, will be
appointed as a Provost's Postdoctoral Fellow. This initial period is intended
to serve in lieu of a postdoctoral appointment. During this time, Fellows will
teach one class per year, receive research support, and participate in
programming designed to help support them in their progress toward promotion.
Instructors will ordinarily be promoted to Assistant Professor at the end of
their initial term.

Candidates are required to have completed the PhD by the position's expected
start date, which is July 1, 2018, and must be no more than three years beyond
receiving that degree by the start date of the fellowship.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and research and
teaching statements, as well as the names and contact information of three
references.

Applicants must submit all materials electronically at the link below for
posting 03576. Letters of reference will be solicited by the Department after
the search committee has reviewed the initial applications. The committee will
begin to review applications on 12 January 2018 and will continue until the
position is filled or the search is closed. For questions about the position,
contact Lenore Grenoble at grenoble at uchicago.edu.

Position is contingent on budgetary approval.

The University of Chicago is an Affirmative Action/Equal
Opportunity/Disabled/Veterans Employer and does not discriminate on the basis
of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national
or ethnic origin, age, status as an individual with a disability, protected
