Scope of Job: The Department of Writing and Language Studies at The University
of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for an Assistant Professor
with specialization in Applied Linguistics commencing September 1, 2018.

Candidates with a PhD in Applied Linguistics (or related field) with an
emphasis in Second Language Acquisition and/or Teaching English as a Second
Language are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have an interest in
pursuing a research agenda related to/drawing from the linguistic resources of
the Rio Grande Valley region. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate
courses of the BA English program, teaching and supervising graduate students,
conducting research, and carrying out service responsibilities.

UTRGV faculty are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student
success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions, as
well as a commitment to UTRGV’s guiding principles, which include promoting
access to postsecondary education to a diverse student body and becoming one
of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving, emerging research
institutions in the U.S.A.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley opened its doors in Fall 2015. UTRGV
was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 and brings together the assets
and resources of UT Pan American and UT Brownsville. The new university is
also home to a School of Medicine which opened in 2016. UTRGV is in the middle
of one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, the southern tip of Texas
known as the Rio Grande Valley.

The Department of Writing and Language Studies at UTRGV offers BA programs in
English and Spanish in conjunction with the Department of Literatures and
Cultural Studies. It also offers MA programs in English (Rhetoric,
Composition, Literacy Studies, and Linguistics), English as a Second Language,
and Interdisciplinary Studies in English. The Department embraces linguistics,
languages (including a wide variety of languages, such as French, German,
Chinese, and Arabic), and rhetoric/composition.

Minimum Qualifications: Assistant Professor: Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics or
related field from an accredited university by the time of hire; evidence of
excellent scholarship and teaching; Evidence of excellence or promise of
excellence in research/scholarship. ABD will be considered; however, degree
must be conferred by September 1, 2018.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications: Expertise in Second Language
Acquisition and/or Teaching English as a Second Language

Preferred Qualifications: In addition to expertise in Second Language
Acquisition and/or Teaching English as a Second Language, a candidate with one
or more of the following will be viewed favorably: a theoretical emphasis in
phonology; some experience with educational technology and online course
design; substantial experience with English Language Learners and/or diverse
student populations. Further, the ideal candidate will have an interest in
pursuing a research agenda related to/drawing from the linguistic resources of
the Rio Grande Valley region.
