Meeting Description:

In honour of Professor Bo Utas on his 80th birthday

Oral narration, one of the verbal arts intrinsic to human nature, has
nevertheless been much less studied than its written counterparts. Oral
traditions are central to Iranian cultures, but are facing a threat of
extinction even more dire than the loss of Iranian indigenous languages
generally. Features of orality in these societies are endangered by media and
schooling, and from a social emphasis on literacy, especially in the dominant
languages of the region. In response, governments and cultural groups in Iran
have taken a stronger interest in oral traditions, and produced material
records reflecting the richness and diversity of Iranian verbal arts. This
conference will bring together international experts to examine varied
perspectives on oral narration among ethnic groups within the Iranian-speaking
cultural sphere. It will encompass story-tellling, poetry, epics, and other
oral narrative traditions, and take in approaches from folklore, ethnology,
typology, discourse linguistics, and social anthropology. An aim of the
conference is to foster the exchange of methods and theoretic models to apply
to oral literature and discourse analysis, and to cultivate further research
among different academic disciplines.
