Description:

The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WOLC) and the College of
Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Sam Houston State University invites
applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty member in American Sign
Language (ASL) at the rank of Assistant Professor with knowledge, skills and
proficiencies in providing training to students in careers related to ASL
Studies and Deaf/Studies Education. In particular, the faculty member will
work closely with CHSS and WOLC to develop and maintain the curriculum for a
new minor in Deaf Studies at SHSU. 

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in Deaf Education,
American Sign Language, Linguistics, or a closely related field by August
2018; documented fluency level of 3.0 or above in ASL (as indexed by the
ASLPI); knowledge of Deaf culture and extensive personal and professional
experiences within the Deaf community; ability to demonstrate depth of
knowledge and understanding in ASL acquisition by first language (L1) and
second language (L2) learners; experience and/or willingness to teach online
courses; outstanding scholarly potential in field of specialization; and
outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills as demonstrated by work
experiences. In addition to the above qualifications, particular consideration
will be given to candidates who are skilled ASL users with experience
developing university-level curriculum in ASL. 

The teaching expectation is three undergraduate courses per semester, using
both face-to-face and online delivery methods. Duties include but are not
limited to: coordination of syllabus and curriculum development for ASL minor
in conjunction with Chair; advising ASL minors; program assessment; developing
and maintaining partnerships in the local Deaf community; working with office
staff on enrollment management; actively participating in the department’s ASL
Club, and Language Learning and Teaching Workshop Series, and serving on
departmental, college, and university committees as necessary.

Teaching responsibilities are both at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville,
Texas (located 70 miles north of Houston), occasionally, at The Woodlands
Campus (40 miles south of Huntsville), and online.  The College of Humanities
and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University is strongly committed to a
