Description:

The College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah (AUS),
United Arab Emirates (UAE), seeks a candidate with a Ph.D. in Literature or
Linguistics to serve as Department Head. The College is seeking a leader to
guide the Department in its program areas of the Bachelor of Arts in English
Language and Literature and a Master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of
Other Languages (TESOL). The Department of English
(https://www.aus.edu/cas/department-of-english) also offers courses in
composition and English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

Required Qualifications: The following are minimum qualifications and should
be addressed in the application letter:
- Ph.D. in Literature or Linguistics or highly related discipline
- A record of successful academic administrative leadership including
personnel management
- Rank of Full Professor
- A record of highly effective teaching
- A distinguished record of relevant scholarship
- Experience in program accreditation and curriculum development
- Experience in faculty evaluation and mentoring

Preferred Qualifications:  In addition to the above, the College will give
preference to candidates with:
- Academic administrative experience at the level of Program Director,
Department Chair or equivalent 
- Experience in supporting graduate programs 
- Experience in the North American style of higher education
- Awareness of the cultural, linguistic and historical contexts of the region
- Commitment to interdisciplinarity

Responsibilities: In addition to the normal leadership and management
responsibilities of a Department Head, expectations include teaching, research
and scholarly activity, service at the college and university level,
maintaining a strong campus presence, supporting student recruitment and
retention efforts, and serving as an advisor/resource for majors and other
students.

Setting:  AUS is located in the Emirate of Sharjah, adjacent to Dubai, UAE.
The university was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin
Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. 
AUS is an independent, not-for-profit coeducational university, serving more
than 5,600 students from 95 nationalities. AUS is licensed and its programs
are accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of
Education's Higher Education Affairs Division in the United Arab Emirates. AUS
is accredited in the United States of America by the Middle States Commission
on Higher Education.
