Description:

The Faculty of Liberal Arts (FLA), Sophia University, invites applications for
an open-rank position in its Core Program, starting 21 September 2018
(preferred) or 1 April 2019 (Assistant Professor is a five-year tenure-track
appointment, while appointments of Associate Professor and Professor are
tenured). The Core Program comprises a set of required courses for degree
students, including composition courses, a public speaking course, and a
critical thinking course. The successful candidate is expected to have a
specialization in English composition and/or rhetoric and an active and
clearly articulated research agenda, and to be able to teach all courses
offered in the program. The language of instruction is English. (Please note
that this is not an English as a Foreign Language teaching position.) 

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Applied Linguistics, TESOL,
or Rhetoric by the time of appointment, a record of scholarly achievements,
and experience teaching academic writing in higher education English-medium
programs. Experience with one or more of the following is also preferred:
undergraduate program management, curriculum development, writing centers,
language testing, quantitative research methods, and teacher training. The
candidate would be expected to carry out administrative duties within the Core
Program and the university. Japanese language competency is desirable but not
required. 

Sophia University, located in central Tokyo, was founded in 1913 by the
Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is one of Japan’s leading private universities.
The Faculty of Liberal Arts is the oldest fully accredited, English-medium
university program in Japan, and offers a comprehensive curriculum in
humanities, social studies, and international business and economics. In
addition to our degree students, we annually welcome about 400 exchange
students from leading universities overseas.

Applications should include a cover letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, and
the names and addresses of three referees. Short listed candidates will be
asked to submit further documents, including three recent publications (at
least two of which should be peer-reviewed). Sophia University values
