Description:

The Institute of German Studies and the Institute of Romance Languages of the
Philosophische Fakultät at the University of Cologne are looking to fill a
position for a doctoral fellowship in the project “Composing events in Romance
causative constructions” .

Commencement of employment is scheduled for 1st of April 2018, pending
financial approval. The position will be financed at 65% of the German pay
grade E 13 and is a 3-year fixed-term work contract. The doctoral student will
work on his/her dissertation and on the project under the joint supervision of
Prof. Klaus von Heusinger and Prof. Martin Becker (University of Cologne) and
Pr. Marta Donazzan (Université de Nantes).

The main goal of the project is to contribute to the understanding of the
syntax and semantics of causative constructions across Romance languages,
through a comparative approach to microvariation that relies on a qualitative
analysis of data, obtained by elicitation and extracted from modern language
corpora. In a more theoretical perspective, the project addresses (1) the
relation of linguistic expressions to the causative structures that they
denote, and (2) the implementation of their formal representation. Within this
framework, the doctoral student will work on a dissertation focusing on the
analysis of causative constructions in one of the major Romance languages
(preferably Spanish, French or Portuguese). For the purpose of the project,
he/she may be asked also to conduct a comparative analysis across Romance and
some fieldwork or corpus-based research.

This includes the following responsibilities:
- She/he will formulate and elaborate on hypotheses regarding the relation
between semantic structures and syntactic constructions;
- She/he will be able to enrich descriptively the picture of causative
structures in Romance and to contribute to the implementation of a formal
analysis of causation at the syntax-semantics interface;
- She/he will be able to work both independently and in joint collaboration
with the supervisors and with the other members of the scientific community in
Cologne and in Nantes. The University of Cologne is presently running the
Collaborative Research Center “Prominence in Language” (SFB 1252:
http://sfb1252.uni-koeln.de/), and offers to the candidate a stimulating
international environment where to develop her/his skills as a researcher.

Profile:
- GENERAL : Team player and capable of working independently
- LANGUAGE SKILLS : A flawless command of spoken and written English as well
as a high level of proficiency in at least one of the major Romance languages
(preferably Spanish, French or Portuguese) and sufficient structural knowledge
of a second Romance language to be able to perform corpus-based work. Working
knowledge of German is a plus.
- OTHER SKILLS : Knowledge of corpus linguistics (annotation, corpus queries)
and statistical analysis of corpus data is a plus.

Job prerequisites:
- MA in linguistics or MA in a romance language with specialization in
linguistics
- a specialization in (formal) syntax or semantics, or a proven interest in
this field
Applications should include a statement of interest (cover letter, addressed
to Professor Klaus von Heusinger), a CV, a copy of the relevant
degrees/certificates, the names and email addresses of two referees.
Applications should be sent as a single PDF file to the application email
address below, with the subject ''PhD Causatives''.

Application Deadline: 31-Jan-2018
