Summer School in Sign Language Linguistics

Focus: This summer school addresses theoretical and experimental issues in sign language linguistics including research in the domains of the phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of sign languages.
Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate


Special Qualifications:
The summer school is open to master students, graduate students and junior researchers who (i) already have familiarity with sign language research but are not trained in formal linguistics or (ii) are trained in formal linguistics but are not yet familiar with sign language linguistics. In order for the two groups of students to work fruitfully together in the classroom, a list of preparatory readings will be provided before the summer school starts.


Description:
The summer school will take place at the scenic setting of Palazzo Feltrinelli
in Gargnano (Garda Lake, Italy) from May 8-12, 2017.

Recommended Education Level: BA

The languages of the Summer School will be English and ASL/IS. Interpreting
between ASL/IS and English will be provided.

The Summer School is the training school of the project “The Sign Hub:
Preserving, Researching and Fostering the Linguistic, Historical and Cultural
Heritage of European Deaf Signing Communities with an Integral Resource”
(2016-2020). For information about this project visit: sign-hub.eu.

It is partly funded by the Labex EFL Empirical Foundations of Linguistics, a
network of Linguistic labs based in the Paris area, and is hosted in the
Gargnano facilities of the University of Milan (Department of Philosophy).

Each class will meet daily (from Monday to Thursday) for about two hours. Each
instructor will be available for individual meetings after the class.

Tuition: 0 USD

Tuition Explanation: There is no tuition fee. Some bursaries will be made available to cover the
cost of accommodation and meals during the stay in Gargnano. Under equal
conditions, priority will be given to young Deaf researchers.

A limited number of non-financially supported students will be admitted to the
school as well. These students will pay no tuition fee either.

The organization will make the reservations. Participants are expected to
arrive on May, 7 and are expected to leave on May, 12.

For students without a bursary, the cost of full board accommodation in a
double room, including breakfast, and two full meals  is 54€ per day.


Financial Aid: Applications accepted until 24-Feb-2017
Bursaries will  cover the cost of accommodation and meals during the stay in Gargnano. There is no tuition fee.
