Meeting Description:

Within the framework of the 9th International Conference on Discourse,
Communication and the Enterprise (DICOEN9: Aston University, Birmingham, 22-24
June 2017,
http://www.aston.ac.uk/lss/research/research-centres/ccisc/news-and-events/201
6/dicoen9/), which aims to promote and foster interaction between those
interested in discourse and communication in organisational settings, Giuliana
Garzone and Paola Catenaccio (University of Milan) are convening the following
panel:

Professional knowledge and ethos building in contested fields:
the construction of reputation in emerging/controversial industries and
professions

The aim of the panel is to explore the discursive practices and the rhetorical
approaches adopted by organisations and professionals to construct for
themselves a credible image and reputation in contested or emergent
fields/domains (e.g. those involving biotechnological/genetic manipulation,
artificial reproduction techniques, end of life issues, environmentally
objectionable behaviours, public health implications, sustainable production
and consumption, honest product promotion, etc.).

A key notion in this respect is that of ethos as defined in Aristotelian
rhetoric, where it indicates the image of him/herself which an orator builds
in discourse in order to persuade an audience. In professional/corporate
domains, an important role as a source of ethical appeal in the construction
of professionals' and organizations' reputation is played by specialized
knowledge, which is displayed and relied on to achieve 'persuasion by
character'.

In particular, in this panel the focus is on how linguistic and discursive
resources associated with specific professional knowledge and expertise are
used in the construction of reputable personae through rhetorical engagement
with both context(s) and audience(s) in controversial or contested
fields/professions.

following:

1. Professional/specialized knowledge in the service of reputation building

5. Ethos building and credibility in the media
6. Crisis/reputation management in corporate/professional communication
7. Representations of expertise in the media (press/television/radio)

than English are also welcome. Each panellist will be allocated 15-20 minutes
for her/his paper depending on the total number of papers included in the
