Meeting Description:

The Corpus and LAnguage Variation In English Research Group (CLAVIER) is
pleased to announce its 2017 international conference focussing on specialised
knowledge and ways in which specialised knowledge is represented and
redefined.
 
CLAVIER shares a methodological framework that combines two complementary
strands of linguistic investigation – corpus analysis and discourse analysis –
to research on language variation in English, both in quantitative and
qualitative terms. Thus, one of the main aims of CLAVIER is to contribute to
an integration of quantitative and qualitative methods in research on language
variation in terms of diachronic, geographic and socio-cultural dimensions
across genres/disciplines/domains and through the methodological tools offered
by corpora. 

The working languages of the conference are English, Italian, French and
Spanish.

Call for Papers:

This conference focusses on specialised knowledge, intended as the ways in
which specialised discourse is construed, shaped, represented, transmitted,
disseminated, accepted and analysed, as well as the ways in which specialised
knowledge and discourse influence our everyday lives. Analytical approaches
based on synchronic, diachronic and/or contrastive, interlinguistic and
intercultural perspectives (including: translation; transcreation;
simplification) are all equally welcome.

The key-issues of the conference include (but are by no means limited to) the
following:

- Forms of specialised knowledge (institutional, academic, technical,
popularised, spoken, social)
- New or emerging specialised genres
- Specialised knowledge in multimodal or multimedia discourse
- Specialised knowledge in social forms of communication (including the social
media)
- The popularisation of specialised knowledge
- Specialised knowledge in teaching contexts (including: CLIL; translator’s
training; interpreter’s training)
- Phraseological, rhetorical, pragmatic, or metadiscoursive aspects of
specialized discourse
- Features and conventions of specialized discourse
- Construing specialised knowledge
- New modes of knowledge dissemination
- Redefinition of disciplinary boundaries
- Co-construction of specialised knowledge
- Lexicographical issues

Papers are welcome on the above topics with reference to English and/or other
natural languages. 

Presentation Formats:

Full papers: Papers will be allotted 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for
discussion.
Posters: work in progress will be accepted for the poster sessions. Posters
will be given high visibility and specific poster sessions will be scheduled
during the conference. Details of the poster layout will be made available on
the conference website.

Submissions:

Submissions should be directed to elena.manca at unisalento.it by 31 May 2017. In
the object line of the message please enter “ABSTRACT SUBMISSION”.
The required format for submissions is an abstract of 300-500 words (excluding
references), possibly in MS/word format, outlining the main thrust and
conclusions of the paper.

Please do not include any self-identifying information on the abstract;
indicate only the title and the abstract itself. On a separate cover sheet,

Proceedings:

A volume of selected papers will be published as a special issue of Lingue e
Linguaggi. Lingue e Linguaggi is an international double-blind peer-reviewed
open access journal, indexed in MLA, Ebsco and DOAJ. In the Italian assessment
system of academic journals, Lingue e Linguaggi is classified as “Classe A”
for the following areas of studies: English, German, Spanish, and Slavic
languages; upgrade to “Classe A” has been recently requested for Italian,
French, Portuguese, general linguistics, and language teaching. Deadline for
manuscript submission: 28 February 2018. Detailed guidelines for formatting
and submitting the manuscript will be provided on the conference website.
