Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics; General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Jan-2017

Meeting Description:

A recent field of research combines several disciplines involving biology,
bioinformatics and linguistics.

Research suggests that there are striking parallels between phylogenetics and
historical linguistics.

The field of phylogenetics investigates the evolution of creatures and
attempts to determine kinship relations at all levels of biological
systematics. In historical linguistics, the evolution of language and the
kinship relations within language families are of central importance. A
parallel could be drawn in the hereditary process: The change of specific
features may lead to new species over time and language, which is transmitted
from generation to generation, also undergoes a development involving changes
and the emergence of new languages. By using bio-informatic methods, it is
possible to construct phylogenetic trees which present kinship relations in
biology as well as in linguistics.

Given the success of the conference ''Capturing Phylogenetic Algorithms for
Linguistics '' in Leiden in October 2015 a follow up event will be held in
Tübingen on March 27-31, 2017. It will be hosted by the Institute of
Linguistics of Tübingen University. The first two days of the conference will
be directed especially towards PhD students. We invite submissions of
original, unpublished work in any area and at the intersection of Linguistics,
Historical Linguistics, Bioinformatics, Biology and Mathematics. Submissions
will be reviewed by several experts in the field, and accepted papers will be
presented orally or as posters. We aim to publish accepted papers open-access
on the University of Tuebingen Library Publication System.

PhD Student Submissions:

We will provide funded accommodation for three nights for up to 12 PhD
students presenting their work at the workshop.

Acknowledgements:

This event is supported by the Institutional Strategy of the University of
Tuebingen (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, ZUK 63)
