Job Title: Postdoctoral researcher in syntax and information structure
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics; Information Structure

Required Language(s): Iranian
                      Romance

Description:

The Institute of Romance Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the
University of Cologne is looking to fill a position as Postdoc in the
Collaborative Research Center 1252 "Prominence in Language".

Commencement of employment is scheduled for 1st of March 2017. The postdoc
position offered is fulltime with weekly working time of 39,83 hours (100%)
and is a fixed-term work contract ending on 31st of December 2020. If pay
scale requirements are met the position will be remunerated in accordance with
pay grade 13 TV-L.

Area of responsibility:

The focus of this research project is the linkage between prominence and
information structure through examining the following: 1) The role of
prominent syntactic positions as attractors for information-structural units
in non-canonical word order. 2) The competition between various prominent
candidates in canonical word order. The postdoc will focus on the first
aspect. This includes the following responsibilities:

- She/he will formulate and elaborate on hypotheses regarding the integration
of prominence in syntactic theory.
- She/he will independently examine specific non-canonical word order
phenomena (primarily sentence periphery and postverbal subjects in Spanish,
Catalan and possibly Persian, clefts and others in French). The research will
be corpus-based, include language comparison and will employ methods of
inferential statistics.
- She/he will independently but in close collaboration with subproject INF
refine the annotation structure for the multilingual corpus of spoken language
sgscorpus.com (with regard to prominent syntactic positions,
definiteness/specificity, etc.). She/he will instruct and train the student
annotators and decide unclear cases of annotation.
- She/he will independently develop and implement a pilot study dealing with
the role of prosody in resolving information-structural polyvalence.
- She/he will examine the possibilities for a probabilistic modeling of the
relation between information structure and prominence as well as the
compatibility of a probabilistic approach with a cartographic model of syntax.
- She/he will develop an algorithmic model of the relation between syntactic
prominence and information structure based on the preliminary studies of the
principle investigator and incorporating the work of the Ph.D. student.

- Ph.D. in linguistics
- High-profile publications and international research experience in the field
of syntax, information structure and at the interface with related fields of
