(Inter)cultural perspectives on language and the mind

The Departments of Cognitive Linguistics and Cultural Linguistics at the
Institute of English, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, are pleased
to announce a series of interdisciplinary conferences (Culture, Cognition,
Communication) aimed to offer scholars of different persuasions a convenient
forum for sharing ideas and discussing issues concerning the relation between
culture, cognition and language from a range of (inter)cultural perspectives.
We are interested in research pertaining to the broadly defined areas of

- Language and cognition
- Language and (visual) culture
- Language and society
- Translation theory
- Embodiment and sociocultural situatedness
- Multimodality and intermediality 

The (Inter)cultural perspectives on language and the mind (ICPLM 2017) is
aimed to be the first edition of the series. In adopting an interdisciplinary
slant on the interface between culture, language and the mind, the conference
is designed to foster academic co-operation across diverse fields of
humanistic studies. 

Suggested topics for discussion may pertain to:

- Cognitive pragmatics
- Relevance theory, discourse studies and the pragmatics of humour  
- Cognitive approaches to literature
- Cognitive approaches to translation studies
- The word / image interplay and intersemiotic translation
- Iconicity and creativity
- Conceptual metaphor and metonymy
- Mental spaces and conceptual blending

2nd Call for Papers:

While we invite all papers concerned with the problem of whether (and, if so,
how) recent developments in cognitive science may inform current debates
concerning the interplay between culture, cognition, and language, other
abstract submissions concerning topics related to the issues of verbal and
non-verbal communication are also welcome.

Abstract submission:

All abstracts (max. 350 words, 4-5 keywords, references (optional)) should be
submitted via our conference site: www.cognition.umcs.pl

The abstracts will be peer-reviewed. Please make sure you have not included
any details indicating the author.

Registration:

The conference fee is EUR 100 / PLN 400 (EarlyBird fee is EUR 90 / PLN 350).
The conference fee for doctoral students is EUR 90 / PLN 350 (EarlyBird fee
for doctoral students is EUR 80 / PLN 300).
The fee covers conference materials, and the costs of the post-conference
publication.

Important Dates:

Abstract submission deadline: 2 April 2017
Decisions communicated by: 30 April 2017
Registration: 1 June 2017 (beginning), 20 June 2017 (closing)
Conference: Thursday 14 September– Friday 15 September 2017

Post-conference publication:

Upon acceptance, selected papers will be published in a post-conference
publication.
