Subject: Call for Book Chapters

Dear All,

For your information, here is a call for book chapters.

“Canonical and non-canonical structures in Polish”
Editors: Wojciech Guz and Bogdan Szymanek (John Paul II Catholic University of
Lublin, Poland)
Deadline for abstract submissions: February 15th 2017

We invite paper proposals for a forthcoming edited volume entitled “Canonical
and non-canonical structures in Polish”. Abstract submissions (ca. 300 words)
should be relevant to the main theme and title of the collection. Topics may
include a variety of perspectives on the canonical and the non-canonical in
the grammar of the Polish language, assuming that ‘canonical’ is to be
understood as ‘classic’, ‘prototypical’ or ‘strictly consistent with the
definition’, and non-canonical structures will be those departing somehow from
the canon. Contributions may be grounded in various theoretical frameworks
(e.g. generative, cognitive, Canonical Typology, Construction Grammar) as well
as functionally-oriented or empirical approaches (corpus linguistics) in any
domain of linguistics: syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics, pragmatics,
etc. The range of structures/constructions to be addressed is virtually
unlimited too. Possible approaches include, but are not limited to, the
following:

- accounting for the distribution of canonical/non-canonical variants
- the canonical/non-canonical contrast viewed as linguistic variation
- the canonical/non-canonical contrast viewed as language change
- the canonical/non-canonical contrast viewed as reflecting degrees of
grammaticality
- the canonical/non-canonical contrast viewed as reflecting categorical
fuzziness

The relationship between a pair of canonical and non-canonical variants might
be the starting point for formal analyses of the contrast. Proposals
addressing contextual factors determining the selection of either canonical or
non-canonical structures (or structure variants) are also encouraged. In this
respect, topics may include considerations of mode of communication
(writing/speech), style, register, situational context, type of interaction.
By extension, we also welcome papers relating non-canonicity to such
diachronic notions as language change, neutralization of contrast,
grammaticalization, etc.

We also invite contributions addressing the problem of the very distinction
between canonical and non-canonical, for example, the criteria – or lack
thereof – of delimitation and of setting the canon apart from the periphery.

Abstract proposals (ca. 300 words) should be submitted by February 15th 2017
to wguz at o2.pl or szymanek at kul.pl The submissions will be peer-reviewed and
notification of acceptance/refusal will be sent by March 1st 2017. Final
versions of the papers will be expected by June 30th 2017. We hope to be able
to publish the collection by the end of 2017.

Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to e-mail us.

Bogdan Szymanek
