Meeting Description:

The Annual Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Student Symposium brings together
graduate students and scholars studying language teaching and learning within
the broad area of second language acquisition. In keeping with the SLA Student
Symposium spirit of diversity, conversation, and advocacy, we invite proposals
from colleagues working on a variety of topics addressing current and emergent
issues in the field of SLA.

The deadline for submission is January 31st via the online submission form at:

Notification of acceptance will be sent by February 18th.  All submissions
will be reviewed anonymously.

Proceedings from symposium will be published by CARLA.

Keynote Speaker: Kim Potowski (Univ. of Illinois at Chicago)

Plenary Speakers: 

Martha Bigelow (Univ. of Minnesota - TC) and Kendall King (Univ. of Minnesota
- TC)
Kate Paesani (Univ. of Minnesota - TC)

Doctoral Workshop:

The Doctoral Workshop received positive feedback from attendees last year. We
will continue to provide this platform for discussion of research at the early
stages of research design, data collection, or analysis. Meeting for one hour
over lunch on Saturday, April 22, small groups of participants led by faculty
moderators will discuss students' work with the main objective of providing
constructive feedback on works-in-progress.

Panel Discussion:

Graduate students are invited to submit a proposal to participate in a panel
titled Reimagining Language Teaching and Learning, which will take place on
the afternoon of Friday, April 21. Four panelists will give 15-minute
presentations related to the theme and share 15 minutes of Q&A with the
audience. For their participation, the panelists will receive an honorarium of
$150 and compensation for transportation and lodging expenses.

Call for Papers:

The Annual Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Student Symposium brings together
graduate students and scholars studying language teaching and learning within
the broad area of second language acquisition. In keeping with the SLA Student
Symposium spirit of diversity, conversation, and advocacy, we invite proposals
from colleagues working on a variety of topics addressing current and emergent
issues in the field of SLA. Topics include but are not limited to the
following:

- Analysis of classroom discourse and interaction 
- Assessment and evaluation 
- Bilingual, immersion, and multilingual education 
- Cognitive approaches to Second Language Acquisition 
- Heritage language education
- Language planning and policy 
- Language revitalization
- Research methods in language and education 
- Second and foreign language pedagogy 
- Sociolinguistic approaches to Second Language Acquisition 
- Technology in Second Language Acquisition

Paper/Poster Presentation Abstracts should be submitted through our online
submission system by January 31, 2017. All submissions must be original,
un-presented, and unpublished work. In your submission, you should indicate if
you would like to be considered for a paper presentation, a poster
presentation, or either. Paper presentations will be allotted 20 minutes,
followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Poster presentations will take place in
the afternoon of Saturday, April 22.
