Meeting Description:

The theme for the sixth edition of MeLT (Meeting on Language Teaching) is
Current trends in the Teaching and Learning of Written Proficiency.

This year’s event will explore a variety of issues related to the teaching and
learning of written proficiency for adult learners of second and foreign
languages in the context of the contemporary language classroom.

Invited Speakers:

Dr. Alister Cumming, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto
“Connecting writing assessments to teaching and learning: Distinguishing
alternative purposes”

Dr. Guillaume Gentil, Associate Professor, Carleton University
“D’une langue à l’autre: Pour une didactique plurilingue et translangagière de
l’écrit”

Le thème de la sixième édition de la ReEL (Rencontre sur l’enseignement des
langues) s’intitule : « L’enseignement–apprentissage de l’écrit : état des
lieux ». En effet, cette année, le colloque explorera diverses problématiques
soulevées par l’enseignement-apprentissage de l’écrit en langues secondes et
étrangères auprès de publics adultes dans la configuration didactique
contemporaine.

Call for Papers:

The recent emergence of new means of written communication has brought with it
new challenges for the teaching and learning of these abilities in second and
foreign language university programs. What are the impacts of the radical
changes currently taking place in the domains of media, internet, and social
and professional relations? What are the repercussions of increasing
international mobility on the teaching of written language?

Research concerning this multifaceted problem raises a variety of questions.
For example, what aspects of culture, grammar, and sociolinguistic variation
should be considered priorities, and what approaches are the most appropriate
in teaching these aspects? How can we most effectively harness recent
multimedia tools to optimize written comprehension and production? What
methods are currently being explored by teachers and researchers, and what
tools are recommended for the evaluation of the diverse facets of written
communication (from evaluation grids and placement tests to classroom
assessment)?

To pursue these and other related questions, we are organizing a forum for
language professionals to share the results of research on the diverse issues
related to the written components of second or foreign language teaching and
learning for adults. Research topics that would contribute to this discussion
include, but are not limited to:

- Composition
- Reading
- Vocabulary
- Grammar for writing
- Evaluation and feedback
- The relation between the oral and written codes
- Language transfer
- Biliteracy
- Integration of intercultural elements
- Using technology to teach written skills
- Distance learning and hybrid courses

MeLT 2017 will focus on adult (university-level) language learners. We
encourage the submission of proposals from researchers and teachers of all
second or foreign languages who focus on written proficiency. Proposals must
be sent to the address melt at uqam.ca.
