Subject: Workshop on Formal and Distributional Perspectives on Meaning

Full Title: Workshop on Formal and Distributional Perspectives on Meaning

Date: 20-Dec-2017 - 22-Dec-2017
Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Contact Person: Raquel Fernandez
Meeting Email: raquel.fernandez at uva.nl
Web Site: http://events.illc.uva.nl/AC/AC2017/

Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics; General Linguistics; Linguistic Theories; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Call Deadline: 01-Sep-2017

Meeting Description:

Formal Semantics is grounded in a logic-based symbolic tradition mainly
concerned with the inferential properties of language. In contrast,
Distributional Semantics focuses on aspects related to descriptive content and
makes use of algebraic techniques to manipulate semantic representations
derived by statistical means. The two frameworks may thus have complementary
strengths. The aim of this workshop is to bring together formal and
computational semanticists interested in synergies between these two
approaches to meaning. Contributions that attempt to integrate the formal and
distributional traditions are particularly welcome.

Invited speakers:

- Raffaella Bernardi (University of Trento)
- Louise McNally (Universitat Pompeu Fabra)

The workshop is part of the 2017 edition of the Amsterdam Colloquium, to be
held at the University of Amsterdam on 20-22 December. The Amsterdam Colloquia
aim at bringing together linguists, philosophers, logicians, cognitive
scientists and computer scientists who share an interest in the formal study
of the semantics and pragmatics of natural and formal languages.
