Full Title: Sociolinguistics of Sexuality Education - Colloquium - Sociolingustics Symposium 24

Date: 27-Jun-2018 - 30-Jun-2018
Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Contact Person: Brian King
Meeting Email: bwking at cityu.edu.hk

Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Applied Linguistics; Discourse Analysis; Pragmatics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 31-Jul-2017

Meeting Description:

Sexuality Education encompasses a range of sites for sociolinguistic research,
in formal education classrooms and in other venues. Thus far sexuality
education has received limited attention in sociolinguistics even though
investigations into such sites stand to yield great insights for language,
gender and sexuality research and educational linguistics. In this colloquium
I hope to place the spotlight more directly on the unique insights that
sexuality education, broadly conceived, can yield in terms of sociolinguistic
theory and practice. Some potential topics include:

- Identity and power in sexuality education
- Embodiment and language in sexuality education
- Intersection of race/ethnicity and gender/sexuality during language use in
sexuality education
- Language, disability and sexuality education
- Language, power and social justice in sexuality education
- Language and heterosexuality in sexuality education
- Transgender students and/or teachers and language use in sexuality education
- Non-binary identities and language use in sexuality education
- Language and sexuality education in the Global South
- Multimodal communication and sexuality education
- Cutting edge issues in the sociolinguistics of sexuality education

I am interested in multiple methodological approaches.

Call for Papers:

Abstracts are sought from anyone working on Sociolinguistics or Linguistic
Anthropology research that focuses on sexuality education in any setting.
Please submit your abstracts to convenor, Brian W. King (City University of
Hong Kong): bwking at cityu.edu.hk

Abstracts should be no more than 350 words (including references) and titles
should be no more than 20 words.

Abstracts will be reviewed and submitted as a colloquium to the conference
committee. The deadline for submission to the conference is 14 August 2017, so
please submit an abstract by 31 July 2017, so that I can have sufficient time
to review and collate the submissions into a proposal.
