Description:

The Ph.D. / M.A. Program in Linguistics at the Graduate Center of the City
University of New York (henceforth the Program) announces the Otheguy-Sackler
Postdoctoral Fellowship for the academic year 2017-2018. The Fellowship, which
is made possible by a gift from Jaseleen and David Sackler, has been created
to mark the retirement of Professor Ricardo Otheguy, who served for twenty
years on the Program's faculty.

The Program invites applications from scholars who hold a Ph.D. in linguistics
or related area. The award involves residence at the Graduate Center and is
for a period of one year. The successful applicant (the Fellow) will undertake
a linguistic research project from the perspective of Columbia School
linguistics (henceforth CS). The Fellow will receive a stipend of $65,000 for
one year. In addition, the Fellowship will cover health insurance expenses.

The application to be prepared by the prospective Fellow must specify in
detail the research problem to be undertaken and provide an account of the
available literature under CS as well as other theoretical approaches. The
application should be no more than 10 double-spaced pages written in 12-point
font, plus a CV and a list of 3 referees.

Requirements of the Otheguy-Sackler Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Fellowship envisions the following distribution of effort:

During the first semester, the Fellow is expected to conduct research that
will advance the field of linguistic analysis and foster conversation on
different approaches to analysis. To that end, the Fellow shall: (a) deepen
his or her acquaintance with CS approaches to linguistic analysis in general
and to the specific problem under study, (b) investigate other theoretical
approaches to the problem under study, (c) consult with faculty at the
Graduate Center and elsewhere in New York who are familiar with CS theory and
who can play a mentoring function, (d) consult with Graduate Center faculty in
areas other than CS who can also provide help in understanding the problem
under investigation, and (e) start engaging in data gathering and analysis.
During the second semester, the Fellow is expected to continue the research
but add a focused effort on publication of results in a recognized refereed
academic venue.

Throughout the course of the year, the following expectations are also
associated with the Fellowship:

- The Fellow is expected to participate on a regular basis in the Linguistics
Program lecture series and events, and to attend as well the bi-monthly CS
University Seminar on the Columbia University campus.

- The Fellow is expected to be the lead presenter at one or more of the
Program's events as well as at the CS University Seminar at Columbia.

- The Fellow is expected to be available for discussion with the Program's
graduate students who may seek him or her out for consultations.
