Level: PhD

Duties: Research,Project Work

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Linguistic Theories; Psycholinguistics; Semantics; Typology

Description:

The Tübingen Collaborative Research Center 833 “Constitution of Meaning” is
looking to fill a four-year PhD position as part of Project B1 “Incrementality
in Semantic Processing” (PIs: Dr. Vera Hohaus, Prof. Dr. Britta Stolterfoht,
Prof. Dr. Rolf Ulrich). Earliest start date is August 1, 2017, later start
dates are negotiable. Funding ends June 30, 2021, payment is according to E13
TV-L, 65%.

The project investigates the incremental composition of meaning. More
specifically, we investigate context dependency and crosslinguistic variation
as two potential triggers of variability in semantic processing strategies.
Our empirical focus are nominal and temporal quantifiers. A more detailed
project proposal is available upon request.

The ideal candidate has a M.A. degree in a psychology or linguistics and a
solid background in formal generative semantics paired with a genuine interest
in crosslinguistic variation and in modelling semantic processing. Applicants
should have good organizational skills and be able to work highly
independently as well as in a team. Some initial experience with semantic
fieldwork and reading time, eye tracking or EEG studies will be of advantage.
The research center supports PhD students with a structured program and
bi-weekly PhD student colloquia. This job does not have a teaching requirement
but also offers the opportunity to gain teaching experience if desired.

Applications should include a cover letter, a CV and a research statement as
well as relevant documentation in a single PDF file. Please send a single PDF
file to Dr. Vera Hohaus no later than June 15, 2017. Dr. Hohaus is also
available for questions about the position. Tübingen University seeks to raise
the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified
women to apply for these positions. Equally qualified applicants with
disabilities will be given preference. The employment contract will be issued
by the central administration of the university.

Application Deadline: 15-Jun-2017
