Description:

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Newcastle University seeks to
appoint an outstanding scholar and research leader to the post of
Professor/Reader in Linguistics. 

The appointment will be made in any field of Linguistics. The appointee will
make a major contribution to research and learning & teaching in Linguistics,
and will provide strategic research leadership for Linguistics in the lead-up
to REF2021 within the Modern Languages and Linguistics Unit of Assessment
(UoA28) which includes researchers from three schools (the School of English
Literature, Language and Linguistics, the School of Education, Communication
and Language Sciences, and the School of Modern Languages). The successful
candidate will assume the role of REF co-ordinator for Linguistics within the
Unit of Assessment. 

As such, the appointee will play a key role in the further strategic
development of Linguistics. Through inspirational and strong leadership they
will contribute to Linguistics’ overall excellence in research performance and
impact culture, championing and embedding increased integration across the
three schools, and ensuring that Linguistics is at the forefront of
transformational research and impact activity.   

The appointee will have a substantial national/international academic
reputation and experience of successful leadership. S/he will join a vibrant
Linguistics Research Community, making a full contribution to the discipline’s
and academic staff’s wider ambitions and delivering high quality outcomes.
This is an exciting post that provides an opportunity to work with
world-leading individuals and groups across a diverse and creative University
research community. 

We therefore invite applications from individuals with an excellent record in
research and teaching in any field of linguistics, successful academic
leadership experience, and an interest in building on the strengths and
enhancing the multidisciplinary nature of Linguistics at Newcastle. The
post-holder will be based in the School that most clearly aligns with their
research and teaching specialisms. 

Interviews for the post are provisionally scheduled for 28 September 2017,
with presentations and informal meetings due to take place on 27 September
2017.
