Description:

The Philosophical Faculty/English Department at Saarland University is opening
a 3-year PhD position (TV-L 13 50%) with a focus on formal semantics together
with its interfaces. The duties are participation in the teaching and research
conducted at the Chair of English Linguistics at Saarland University; this
includes teaching, typically an introductory 90-minute class per week. The
theoretical research conducted should be accompanied by solid empirical work
either synchronically (e.g. via modern elicitation techniques) or
diachronically (via systematic corpus work). Statistical methods should
accompany the empirical work. We also expect candidates to be willing to learn
and work with the topic of information density. The ideal candidate will have
an excellent theoretical background (semantics and its interfaces) and should
have as much as possible in terms of training in some of the following:
demonstrated corpus expertise, experience with experimental methods,
experience with statistical methods (e.g. in R). Excellent English skills are
expected, as are computer skills and especially the capability to work in a
team at the Chair of English Linguistics. The successful candidate will be
expected to participate in all of the group’s research activities. Interested
candidates should send in their applications, indicating the position number
W1228, with the usual documents (CV, a cover letter, a small work sample -
e.g. a paper or the MA-thesis - and the contact details of two potential
references) to the address indicated. Minimal requirement: M.A. degree in
English/general linguistics (or an equivalent field). Prospective starting
date: September 15, 2017 (a later starting date is possible, but no later than
November 1, 2017) Payment: according to the German TV-L pay scale (TV-L 13
50%). The official German announcement can be found at the following web
address (which is NOT an online application website):
