Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Meeting Description:

This is the 10th meeting of the British Association for Applied Linguistics
Special Interest Group on Language, Gender and Sexuality. In April 2017, held
at the University of Nottingham, the event theme is ‘Language, Discrimination
and Conflict’.

At this event, we will explore the ways in which language can ignite and
perpetuate discriminatory practices, yet can also be a vehicle through which
such discrimination can be resisted or challenged.

We will also consider how conflict between opposing groups or norms associated
with gender and/or sexuality may be linguistically constructed, rationalised,
and defused.

The event brings together a range of researchers interested in issues of
language, discrimination and conflict in relation to gender and/or sexuality,
and explores possible ways in which these issues can be addressed. As well as
two keynote speakers, Celia Kitzinger and Erez Levon, the programme includes
individual short papers on a range of relevant topics and a roundtable
discussion involving all delegates.

Full fee - £45
BAAL members - £40
Concessionary fee - £30
