Subject: Launch of the International Ecolinguistics Association

Ecolinguistics is an emerging form of linguistics which considers humans not
only in the context of society, but also as part of the larger ecological
systems that life depends on. With the increasing urgency of environmental
issues, from climate change and biodiversity loss to environmental justice and
resource scarcity, there has been increasing global interest in exploring what
the discipline of linguistics can do to address these issues.

To reflect the world-wide interest in ecolinguistics, the Ecolinguistics
Association has reinvented itself as the International Ecolinguistics
Association, with a steering group of 40 members who represent a diverse range
of subject and geographic areas, 13 partner organisations, international
conferences, and an improvement to the journal Language & Ecology, which is
now peer reviewed and accepts papers in a range of languages. The website is
http://ecolinguistics-association.org

The International Ecolinguistics Association is also working with the
University of Gloucestershire to create an open, free online course The
Stories We Live By: a course in ecolinguistics, which will introduce some of
the techniques of ecolinguistic analysis. The course is due to start in May
but is open for early registration here http://storiesweliveby.org.uk

Another important development is that the new Association is clearly focused
on ecolinguistics in its literal sense, as an ecological humanities
discipline, rather than some of the metaphorical uses of the term. This is
expressed on the website as follows:

“The International Ecolinguistics Association is a network of researchers from
around the world who share ideas, opinions and articles about ecolinguistics.
Ecolinguistics explores the role of language in the life-sustaining
interactions of humans, other species and the physical environment. The first
aim is to develop linguistic theories which see humans not only as part of
society, but also as part of the larger ecosystems that life depends on. The
second aim is to show how linguistics can be used to address key ecological
issues, from climate change and biodiversity loss to environmental justice.”

Membership of the Association is free and currently there are 514 members.
