Description:
The ring lecture: The Multilingualism and Diversity Lectures will take place
at the University of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, Northern Germany, in June
2017. The ring lecture will focus on the topics Multilingualism and Diversity
in language acquisition and education. The lectures will be held in English;
they will be video-recorded and presented online.

The topics of multilingualism and migration are core themes at the University
of Hildesheim. For this reason, it established a Centre for Educational
Integration, which is committed to exploring bilingualism. The Centre for
Educational Integration at the University of Hildesheim sees itself as a think
tank and a platform for both academic and civil society stakeholders who
explore the opportunities and challenges of inclusion processes in
increasingly diversified societies in an empirical, basic theoretical and
practical manner.

As a profile university, the University of Hildesheim develops its range of
subjects in the Faculties of Educational and Social Sciences; Cultural Studies
and Aesthetic Communication; Linguistics and Information Science; and Natural
Sciences, Mathematics, Economics and Computer Science. In all its areas of
responsibility, the university proactively works towards the realisation of
equality for all. Ethnic, religious and social equality, and equality between
men and women in the university are matters of particular concern to the
university.

The Multilingualism & Diversity Lectures tie in with the project Shaping
Change – language promotion and language training as an integral part of
innovative teacher training in Lower Saxony.

In a lecture series entitled Multilingualism and Diversity Lectures,
internationally renowned researchers will talk about the current state of
knowledge of fundamental issues concerning language training and language
promotion.

During the first stage of the previous project SHAPING CHANGE. Language
promotion and language training as an integral part of innovative teacher
training in Lower Saxony (referred to below as Change I), a structured
qualification programme in the areas of language training and German as a
Second Language for teacher training students of all subjects was devised,
tailored to different types of school. The programme is intended to be taken
throughout university as an obligatory qualification programme. Emphasis was
placed on teaching the skills required to be able to discuss topics in the
relevant subject (Goschler/Montanari 2015). The project partners developed
core content for the whole of Lower Saxony, as well as concepts and materials
for the consultation, further training and continuing education of university
lecturers and teaching staff at schools.

Change II / Hildesheim hopes to capture a wide audience. There are several
common issues that can be addressed on a larger scale than at the university
level. Online media offer the ideal opportunity for presenting developments in
Lower Saxony on a national and international arena.

The aim of the project is to embed the topics of language promotion and
language training as an integral part of innovative teacher training in Lower
Saxony in a national perspective, expanding the geographic range.

The educational offerings will be made available online for students of
Teacher Training, university lecturers and members of the teaching staff.
Emphasis is placed on providing the formats online in a manner that users find
attractive.
