Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Historical Linguistics

Call Deadline: 22-Mar-2017

Meeting Description:

Beyond Simplistic Narratives: Can Archaeology, Linguistics and Genetics go
together?

Romantic ideas of the unity of people, culture and language inspired early
archaeological studies, which aimed to identify such entities in the material
record of the distant past. However, history has shown that this soon
culminated in fascist narratives within archaeology and was misused by
political forces to scientifically justify war crimes.

Conversely, the ravages caused by warring nations have caused widespread
embarrassment within archaeology, to the extent that the possibility of
language spreading with people was denied altogether. While migration is not a
prerequisite for the spread of language, it is problematic from the linguistic
perspective because historical records abound in cases where movements of
people are coupled with language expansions.

Recent isotopic and palaeogenetic studies have helped narrowing the knowledge
gap on prehistoric mobility, which garnered wide public interest. We are
convinced that we as scientists carry responsibilities in interpreting if, how
and to what extent population movements can be associated with the spread of
languages, and in preventing (ab)use of such data to satisfy particular
agendas. This creates a heavy burden on scholars from different disciplines to
align facts and frameworks in a meaningful yet responsible way.

Call for Papers:

Beyond Simplistic Narratives: Can Archaeology, Linguistics and Genetics go
together?
Wolfgang Haak, Guus Kroonen & Philipp Stockhammer

Participants rooted in one of these disciplines will present critical and
constructive approaches to the integration of
archaeological/linguistic/genetic data. They will try to transgress the
borders and integrate their results with those from the other disciplines.
Each participant will explain the methodological and epistemological issues of
her/his approach in order to contribute to an overarching methodological
tool-box for integrative analysis.

Submitting your Contribution:

Submitting a paper, poster or other contribution can only be done via the
online submission form by visiting https://www.klinkhamergroup.com/eaa2017/,
creating an account and then submitting using the online form. Sessions

the session organisers. A discussion session can either consist of
(pre-circulated) papers, a key note paper and discussion (papers), pecha kucha
presentations (six slides in six minutes 40 seconds), elevator pitches,
posters exclusively, contributions to a round table, etc. Posters can be part
of discussion sessions.

Tab 2 allows you to select the session you want to join.

Please note: in some cases formal requirements have not been met by the
session (co)organisers (i.e. payment of EAA membership), so these sessions are
not available for submission of a paper, poster or other contribution yet.
Please check later for the availability of the session.

Tab 3 requires your personal and contact details and those of your
co-author(s). Take special care to write all names and affiliations correctly.
They will be reproduced to the letter in the programme and abstract book.

Fill in the title and abstract of your paper or poster and indicate the format
of your contribution at Tab 4. Please use plain text only. Do not use tabs,
subscripts or superscripts. No figures or tables are allowed. Maximum of 300
words.

Please review carefully your submission in Tab 5 and submit. After you have
submitted the form you will receive an e-mail confirmation.

Modifying your Contribution:

You can still review or change your abstract before the deadline by using the
link in the confirmation e-mail.

Deadline:

The deadline for submitting or modifying an abstract is 22 March 2017, 23:59
