Description:

The Columbia School Linguistic Society invites applications for the fifth
round of its Graduate Fellowship program. The successful applicant(s) will
undertake a linguistic research project from the perspective of Columbia
School linguistics under the guidance of a Mentor in the Society.

The project will address a grammatical, lexical, or phonological problem of
the Fellow’s choice. The Fellow must be a matriculated student in, an
applicant to, or a recent graduate of a recognized graduate program in
linguistics or related area.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of $25,000 for the period covering Sept. 1,
2017 to Aug. 31, 2018. Assuming satisfactory progress, stipend payments will
be made on a monthly basis. The Fellowship includes Society membership.

The application is to be prepared in consultation with the prospective Mentor.
It consists of a statement of the problem, an account of existing analyses, a
brief review of the relevant literature, and a description of the data to be
used. The prospective Fellow must contact the prospective Mentor, who will
review the application before submission.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is May 31, 2017. Proposals will be
reviewed by members of the Society’s Executive Committee, assisted by
additional reviewers. Applicants will be notified by the end of June 2017.

The Fellow will work on the project no less than 15 hours per week and will
produce analytical results accordingly; will seek out the Mentor during the
year of the Fellowship, consulting with the Mentor on a regular basis; will
participate on a regular basis in the bi-monthly CS Columbia University
Seminar; will be the lead presenter in two of these seminars in the Fall and
two in the Spring for reports of work-in-progress and consultation with
Seminar members. The Fellow is expected to be an active supporter of the
Society.

The Fellow will provide a year-end progress report detailing the state of the
analysis at the end of the Fellowship period, by Aug. 31, 2018.

After the Fellowship period ends, the Fellow will make every effort to publish
results in a recognized academic venue, acknowledging therein the support of
the Society.
