Meeting Description:

Current globalization trends demand innovative approaches to language
teaching, language learning and teacher training in both L1 and L2. Within
this context, educators ought to address the critical need for language skills
in our interconnected world. This conference is intended to provide a joint
platform for discussion and exchange of research results on issues and
challenges related to language teaching, language learning and teacher
training in Portuguese and Spanish, in an effort to strengthen connections
between L1 and L2, to promote interactions between researchers and
practitioners with different backgrounds and experiences, and to increase
cooperation between the two languages in the field of educational linguistics.
Our aim is to bring together academics, teachers and researchers from across
the globe, to discuss and debate about theories, methodologies and best
practices.

Bringing together research and practice, an international conference hosted by
the Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa (CLUL) and the Faculdade
de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL), will take place in Lisbon, at the
School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, on November 2-3,
2017.

For this first edition, the conference will be organized around the theme
Oracy Challenges in L1 and L2. Oracy, a term for ability in speech production
and listening comprehension, understood as a key dimension of language
learning and instruction, is as important as literacy across the curriculum
and over the lifespan of individuals. However, it is not yet considered a
priority for many of the educational systems. Accordingly, we would like to
emphasize the role of oracy education, both in first and foreign language
contexts, and to promote the need for more research on the development of
spoken language skills in all levels of education, as well as for deepening
teachers' content and pedagogical knowledge in oracy. Nonetheless, the
submission of papers on other topics related to language teaching, language
learning and teacher training in Portuguese and Spanish is welcome, as well as
papers on interdisciplinary research collaboration.

It is envisaged that selected papers will be published in a special issue of
an international journal.

Invited speakers
Anne O'Keeffe (Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, Ireland)
Raquel Pinilla Gómez (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain)

Important dates
2 June 2017: deadline for submission of abstracts
3 July 2017: notification of acceptance; registration starts
15 September 2017: registration ends
2-3 November 2017: conference
