Call Deadline: 18-Apr-2017

Meeting Description:

Workshop: Conversational speech and lexical representations
Date: June 8-9, 2017 (right before PaPE in Cologne)
Location: Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands
Organisers: Mirjam Ernestus, Louis ten Bosch, Martijn Bentum, Sophie Brand,
Lisa Morano, Annika Nijveld

Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics

This workshop closes two large-scale research projects on the comprehension of
reduced word pronunciation variants (e.g. yeshay for yesterday) in
conversational speech by both native and non-native listeners. These projects
led to intriguing insights (that the hosts will present during the workshop),
also concerning the nature of spoken word mental representations. At the same
time, the projects raised new questions, especially regarding the interaction
between memory traces and speech perception processes. Our speakers will share
their take on these issues in plenary talks, and engage in workshop-wide
discussions with all participants.

Confirmed speakers include:

- Louis ten Bosch (Radboud University)
- Audrey Bürki (University of Postdam)
- Lisa Davidson (New York University)
- Gareth Gaskell (University of York)
- Effie Kapnoula (Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language)
- Connor T. McLennan (Cleveland State University)
- Mark Pitt (Ohio State University)
- Antje Schweitzer (University of Stuttgart)
- Miguel Simonet (University of Arizona)
- Matthias Sjerps (Radboud University)
- Atsuko Takashima (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics)
- Benjamin V. Tucker (University of Alberta)
- Natasha Warner (University of Arizona)

Call for posters:

We invite submissions for poster presentations on recent work addressing the
topics of the workshop, including, but not limited to:

- How listeners process conversational speech, including reduced word
pronunciation variants
- The nature of spoken words' mental representations (e.g. abstract
representations versus exemplar-based representations, types of information
included in the representations, etc.)
- The problems encountered by listeners in understanding reduced word
pronunciation variants
- The processes used by listeners to learn new reduced word pronunciation
variants
- The evolution of spoken words' mental representations over time
- Corpus research on reduced word pronunciation variants (in any language)

Please, send your abstract of maximally 250 words to conlexworkshop at gmail.com
before Tuesday 18 April. You will be notified about acceptance before Tuesday
2 May.
