Meeting Description:

46th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest
October 5-7, 2017
New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM

The LASSO annual meeting is distributed across the LASSO area, from Louisiana
to the Pacific Coast. The 46th annual conference will be held at the New
Mexico State University in fall 2017.

The Linguistic Association of the Southwest (LASSO) is a linguistics
association in the United States whose purpose is the advancement of the
scientific study of language. While many of our members study the languages of
the southwestern United States, LASSO has an international focus; it draws its
membership and includes linguistic scholarship from any language and any
region in the world.

The 2017 LASSO Conference will be held in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Las Cruces
is located 225 miles south of Albuquerque, 48 miles northwest of El Paso,
Texas and 46 miles north of the Mexican border at Santa Teresa. The
conference’s website is https://sites.google.com/site/lasso2017xlvi/home

Conference Theme: Language ideologies

2nd Call for Papers:

LASSO XLVI

October 5-7, 2017, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Submission of Abstracts and Proposals:

We welcome abstracts for papers in all areas of linguistics. Abstracts for
papers or panels on linguistic variation and contact, language policy and
planning, language attitudes, particularly those with a special emphasis on
language ideologies, are especially welcome.

The deadline for abstract/proposal submission is June 1, 2017.

Proposals for complete panels with multiple speakers are also welcome but must
fit within the 90 minutes time frame of the conference presentations.

The deadline for panel submission is May 15, 2017.

Submissions by graduate students are especially welcome, and students are
eligible for the Helmut Esau Prize, which includes a $400 award.

Presentation Format:

Presentation time for papers will be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for
discussion.
Abstracts may be in English or Spanish. Presentations should be given in the
same language as the abstract. Only one abstract as single author and a second
as co-author will be accepted from any one individual.

Abstract Format:

Abstracts should be 250-500 words, single-spaced in 12 point Times New Roman
font. Abstracts should summarize the main points and indicate key aspects of
the data and methodology. Use of special font items should be kept to a
minimum. In general, omit the bibliography. Abstracts will be distributed via
the Internet as received.
At the beginning of the abstract, write the title of the paper. At the end of
the abstract, repeat the title and also list the author's name (if more than
one author, list names in the order they should appear in the program),
academic affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, cellular phone
number, and e-mail. If the first author, who will be point of contact for the
submission, will not be available at his/her usual address or e-mail during
the summer, provide summer contact information in the cover e-mail.

Abstract Submission:

Abstracts must be submitted via EasyAbs
(http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/LASSO2017) as a .pdf, .txt, or .doc file.
Special font items travel best in a .pdf file. Authors will receive a reply
notifying them that their abstracts are under consideration. If such
notification has not been received within one week, the abstract did not reach
its destination and should be re-sent. Authors will be notified by late July
as to whether their papers have been accepted. For questions regarding
abstracts or the conference program, please contact Patricia Gubitosi at
gubitosi at umass.edu.

Lasso Membership:

Participation in LASSO is a privilege of membership. This means that an
individual must be a current member in order to present a paper and be listed
in the conference program. You may fill out a membership form at the same time
you register for the conference online. Membership includes a subscription to
the International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest:
http://clas.ucdenver.edu/lasso/ijlasso.html.
