Subject: Obituary: Dr. Kazuko Inoue

 
Dr. Kazuko Inoue, Professor Emeritus and former President of Kanda University
of International University, passed away in the early morning of May 3, 2017,
at the age 98. 

She was regarded as ‘the Mother of Theoretical Linguistics in Japan.’ Her
career spanned more than half a century, during which she greatly contributed
to linguistic research in Japan, introducing generative grammar to Japan (e.g.
translation of Emmon Back’s Introduction of Transformational Grammar, Noam
Chomsky’s Reflection on Language, etc.), laying the foundation for Japanese
generative grammatical research with original and influential ideas of various
syntactic phenomena of Japanese, and raising many distinguished linguists
teaching at ICU, Tsuda College, and Kanda University of International Studies.
