Description:

The Writing Center at Hiroshima University, Japan, has announced a job opening
for a Writing Advisor Fellow (Paid).  This Fellowship Program is ideal for
someone who wishes to gain professional experiences working with non-native
English writers and speakers, focusing on academic writing at the tertiary
level and above.  The Fellow will work full-time at Hiroshima University,
located in two campuses at Higashi-Hiroshima and Kasumi, for a contract period
of six months (with a strong possibility of extending the period up to one
year) starting from September 2017. The Fellow will receive an after-tax
monthly salary of approximately 220,000 yen.  In addition, he/she will be
given a travel allowance for one-time airfare to and from Japan.

Responsibilities:

- To provide consultation about academic writing in English, such as drafts
for academic journals and proposal abstract drafts for international
conferences (appointment given priority)
- To facilitate writing groups for assisting HU researchers to write high
quality journal papers
- To work independently or as part of a team to plan, organize, and lead small
group sessions (hopefully at least once a month) related to improving HU
researchers’ academic writing and presentations
- To work with the Research Planning Office in polishing English language
summations of articles in Japanese mainly for faculty in the Art and
Humanities and Social Sciences fields, so that international audience can
easily follow them
- To give mid-term and final reporting presentation and to compile written
report based on the presentations
- To collect information about and analyze the standard operating procedures
of writing centers at other universities with specific interest in how they
support and improve HU researchers’ academic writing; and to analyze the data
collected through services such as consultations and writing groups for
self-evaluation and improvement of the Writing Center
- To assist in organization and logistics of events organized by all areas of
the Writing Center and the Research Planning Office, including writing English
announcements of seminars for the web site

Qualifications:

- Experiences in advising academic writing; Writing tutor experience at a
writing center or similar program in a university required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English required,
proficiency in Japanese is an advantage.
- M.A. or above in Applied linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL), Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, or Scientific and
Technical Writing required.  Ph.D. holder preferred.
- Experiences in publishing several journal papers required.
- Proficiency in the use of MS Office applications skills (Word, Excel and
PowerPoint) required.
- The ability to coordinate activities and events.
- Presentation and public speaking skills.
