Linguistic Field(s): Pragmatics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 30-Jun-2017

Meeting Description:

Organised by Michael Haugh & Valeria Sinkeviciute, The University of
Queensland

Getting acquainted with others is one of the most basic interpersonal
communication events. Yet there have only been a limited number of studies
that have examine variation in the interactional practices through which
unacquainted persons become acquainted and establish relationships in
different languages and cultures (e.g. Haugh and Carbaugh 2015; Maynard and
Zimmerman 1984; Schneider 1988; Svennevig 1999; Usami 2002). In light of
recent interest in this topic, the School of Languages and Cultures at the
University of Queensland is organising a one-day research workshop, Getting
Acquainted across Cultures, on the 20th October 2017.

Our keynote speaker will be Professor István Kecskés (University of New York
at Albany).

Call for Papers:

We welcome pragmatically-oriented studies in different languages focusing on
initial encounters or small talk amongst previously unacquainted individuals
in both intracultural and intercultural settings. It is anticipated that there
will be approximately 30 minutes allocated per paper (20 minutes for
presentation followed by 10min for Q&A).

There are plans to publish a selection of papers in an edited special issue of
an appropriate journal.

There will be no charge for this event.

Abstract submission:
Abstracts of 200-300 words are due by 30 June to Valeria Sinkeviciute
(v.sinkeviciute at uq.edu.au)
Notification of acceptance will be sent by 10 July.
