Meeting Description:

The aim of the Conference is to bring together scientists and contributions
from contemporary research on children's literacy development in first and
second/foreign/additional language. Recent findings point at multiple
understandings of literacy, one of the core human competencies, for successful
social participation. Therefore, literacy development from an early age should
focus on a range of different literacy types. It should be emphasised that the
term literacy also involves teaching children to read and to understand
various text genres, not only with the aim of being informed, but also with
the aim of aesthetically experiencing literary work.

We are happy to announce the following plenary speakers:

Janet Enever, Umeå University, Sweden
Milena Mileva Blažić, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
Jelena Kuvač Kraljević, University of Zagreb, Croatia.

Call for Papers:

8th International Conference Children And Languages Today welcomes
presentations focusing on the following areas of interest:

- Emergent and early literacy
- Functional literacy
- Cross-linguistic influences, linguistic landscape and literacy development
- Children's literature and literacy development
- Media and literacy development

The suggested topics are not restrictive, but are meant to be motivating for
exploration and study of children-languages-literacy relationship.
In order to address the challenges and issues related to literacy development
in children we invite researchers from various theoretical and applied
perspectives (e.g. cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics,
psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, first and second language acquisition,
bilingualism, multilingualism, language assessment, language education,
language policy and planning, etc.) to submit papers grounded in cognitive,
socio-cultural, dynamic and emergent theories of literacy development.
Furthermore, we invite contributions concentrating on the analysis of literary
text and discourse, literary pragmatics and functional perspectives in
literature. The Conference also encompasses themes discussing artistic value
and usage of media materials in the context of new media, taking into account
media effects, intermediality and interdisciplinary research. Also, we
encourage submissions by researchers studying literacy development via
multimodal texts as features of global digitalised culture.

Please send your abstract up to 300 words to childrenandlanguages at foozos.hr no
later than 15 June 2017. You will be notified of your abstract acceptance by
15 September 2017.

Official Conference languages are Croatian and English.
