Description:

Applications are invited for a VCRS funded PhD studentship tenable in the
Faculty of Social Science at the Jordanstown Campus. Please note that a
faculty reorganisation is underway at Ulster and these studentships will be
based within the new structure in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social
Sciences.

Project Summary:

The Institute for Research in Social Sciences has funding for a PhD project
that will make a substantive contribution to one or more of the University’s
four thematic priorities:

- Social Renewal: Peace, conflict and transition, educational attainment,
social and economic leadership, communication and leadership, social and
public policy, national and international security, governance and human
rights.
- Sustainability: Urban renewal, energy and the environment, national
infrastructure, food security, digital futures.
- Healthy Communities: Mental health, ageing, health innovation and policy,
sport for life, history and heritage.
- Creativity and Culture: Creative economy, cultural diversity, design, media
& the arts, innovation and creative entrepreneurship, languages.

We particularly encourage innovative and original applications which
critically engage with the topics covered under these four themes, focusing on
issues, such as, inequality, exclusion, power, democratic participation and
justice (this list is not exclusive).

It is expected that the proposal will be primarily rooted in the following
fields/disciplines - criminology, education, linguistics, public
administration public policy, social policy, social work or youth work
(although Interdisciplinary approaches, of course, are welcome).

Entrance Requirements:

All applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in the
social sciences or a cognate area. Applications will be considered on a
competitive basis with regard to the candidate’s qualifications, skills
experience and interests. Successful candidates will enroll as of 1 October
2017, on a full-time programme of research studies leading to the award of the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The studentship will comprise fees together with an annual stipend of £14,553
and will be awarded for a period of up to three years subject to satisfactory
progress.
