Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics

Subject Language(s): Spanish (spa)

Call Deadline: 28-Feb-2018

Meeting Description:

Globalization has caused the displacement and movement of speakers of Spanish
into different geographical spaces across the globe. As a result, these
speakers have come into contact both with speakers of other varieties of
Spanish and with speakers of other languages.

In North America, there is an established network of scholars conducting
research on the sociolinguistic outcomes of these contact situations, in which
both speakers and their languages are involved. By contrast, only little and
scattered work has examined the sociolinguistic outcomes of these contacts in
European localities, despite the fact that the modern displacement and
movements of speakers of Spanish into different geographical European spaces
dates back to the 1960s for people from Spain and to the 1970s for people of
Latin American origin. As a result, it is an understudied topic and there is
no specific platform in which researchers working on it can regularly share
their findings with colleagues, create networks with them and, eventually, set
the foundations of collaborative research projects. This conference intends to
bring together, for the first time, researchers working on the sociolinguistic
outcomes of the presence of speakers of Spanish in different European spaces.

Call for Papers:

We welcome proposals (in Spanish or English) for oral presentations addressing
the conference theme from different perspectives. Suggested areas of research
include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Language variation and change
- Language or dialect contact
- Bilingualism and multilingualism
- Language ideologies, stereotypes, and attitudes
- Language and identities of transnational people and their offspring
- Language maintenance and transmission
- Language policy and planning
- Linguistic landscapes
- Critical discourse analysis

The presentations will be allocated 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions.

Individual or joint presenters should submit an abstract of no more than 350
words through EasyAbs
(https://linguistlist.org/confservices/EasyAbs/customabssub.cfm?Emeetingid=610
2JA44585E6C5A406050441) no later than February 28, 2018.

Your abstracts should contain a clear research question, reference to relevant
prior research, a detailed description of the method, as well as a concise
summary of your (preliminary) results.
Please make sure to remove your information from the document submitted.

Your abstracts will be reviewed by our scientific committee and we expect to
confirm acceptance by March 15, 2018.
