Dissertation Title: English Language Errors in the Linguistic Landscape of the
United Arab Emirates: the Wrong, the Right & the Bright

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Subject Language(s): English (eng)

Dissertation Director(s):
Esther Pickersgill

Dissertation Abstract:

We live in a world that is saturated with language. Gorter (2006) expresses a
similar idea by saying that language surrounds us everywhere: it is there on
“shop windows, commercial signs, posters'', etc. This leads us to the concept
of linguistic landscape (LL) defined by Landry & Bourhis (1997) as the extent
to which languages are prominent and visible on public and commercial signage
in a certain area. This dissertation adopts the UAE linguistic landscape (UAE
LL) as its context, and focuses on one aspect of this rich LL: errors. The UAE
LL is one of the most under-studied LL's despite being one of the richest.

Please note that this is an MA dissertation, but it really worth listing as it
fills a very important gap in its focus.
