Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in urban
semiotics, memory studies or and / or linguistic landscape research at the
University of Duisburg-Essen.
 
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious researcher to join the
Beethoven-funded DFG (German research Foundation) project “Memory and ideology
in the linguistic landscape: Commemorative (re)naming in East Germany and
Poland 1916-2016” (Principal Investigators: Prof. Isabelle Buchstaller
(University of Duisburg-Essen) and Prof. Malgorzata Fabiszak (University of
Poznan)). This 3-year project aims to explore and formalize the
socio-political and ideological factors that condition changes in
commemorative street naming in five cities in Eastern Germany and Poland. The
overall objective of this bi-national project is the empirically-driven
quantitative and qualitative modelling of the ideological processes that
continue to shape Eastern European linguistic landscapes.

The postdoctoral fellow will be hosted by the German side of the project and
be based at Essen University. They are principally responsible for the
collection and analysis of sociolinguistic interviews and a corpus of German
media data. They will also liaise with archives and museums and will be
responsible for organising the outreach element of the project.

The ideal candidate will have a background in urban semiotics, linguistic
landscape analysis, memory studies, media studies, critical and /or multimodal
discourse analysis and a strong research interest in Eastern Europe. A very
good knowledge of German and English is required. Knowledge of Polish is a
plus but not required. This is a 50% position for 3 years.

Starting date: 16. April 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter 

Duration: 3 years
