Description:

PhD opportunities in French, including French linguistics, at Newcastle
University, UK. If you or your students might be interested in coming here to
do a PhD in linguistics, I'd be grateful if you could get in touch with me,
just so I know that you are interested, and what kind of topic you'd like to
do. I'll then put you in touch with the other people who need to know,
including possible co-supervisors.

Because of the funder (the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council), this PhD
would be based in the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle, and (presuming
it was on French linguistics) the main supervisor would be me. All PhD
students have a second supervisor, though, so your second supervisor could be
someone from outside Modern Languages if that was appropriate.
Any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership PhD Studentships in French
Studies at Newcastle University

Deadline for applications: 10 January 2018

Application masterclasses: Tuesday 14 November, Queen's University, Belfast;
Wednesday 15 November, Newcastle University

The Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership invites top-calibre
applicants to apply to its doctoral studentships competition 2018. Over fifty
fully-funded doctoral studentships are available across the full range of arts
and humanities subjects, including French studies.

Northern Bridge is an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded
collaboration between Newcastle University, Durham University and Queen's
University Belfast. Our aim is to deliver outstanding doctoral education in
the arts and humanities, and successful applicants will join a thriving cohort
of over 100 Northern Bridge PhD students recruited through the studentship
competition in the last two years. Northern Bridge offers exceptional
supervision by academic staff researching at the cutting edge of their
disciplines, vibrant research environments that promote interdisciplinary
enquiry, and research training and career development opportunities tailored
to the needs of twenty-first century researchers.

We invite applications for doctoral research in French studies at Newcastle in
a wide range of areas within and outside linguistics. Within French
linguistics, our particular specialities are:
- dialectology
- sociolinguistics
- language variation and change
- historical linguistics
- phonetics
- phonology

If you want to specialise in another subfield of linguistics, but with a
French angle, co-supervisions with specialists in other areas, from other
Schools at Newcastle, are also available—but, for this competition, you need
to be mainly based in the School of Modern Languages.

Northern Bridge provides a comprehensive and attractive package of financial
support over the duration of study, which incorporates:
- fees and maintenance at the UK Research Councils' national rate
- a research training support grant (RTSG) to fund the costs of study abroad,
conference attendance and fieldwork
- financial support to attend our cohort-building events
- financial support for short-term placements, international study visits or
specialist skills training events.

For further details, please see the Northern Bridge website:
http://www.northernbridge.ac.uk/
