Meeting Description:

The Department of Linguistics, University of Mumbai has organized a Lecture
Series on ''Topics in the interface between Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics:
Asserting, Asking and Answering'' under the GIAN programme. In this Lecture
Series, Prof. Veneeta Dayal, Department of Linguistics, Rutgers University,
USA will be delivering lectures. Over the ten days, several topics such as
Syntax-Semantics-Pragmatics Interface and cross-linguistic variation, Logical
Form, Number morphology and interpretation, Complementation, Scope-marking,
Wh-movement, Weak islands and Pied-piping, Pair-list reading, Long-distance
lists, Mention-all and Mention-some answers, role of prosody in interpretation
and various kinds of questions and their form and meanings will be covered.

The Lecture-Series has two dictinct but related foci:

a. Even though the primary language from which data and motivation for
theoretical claims is provided is English, effort is made to place the core
insights within a broader cross-linguistic framework. For this reason, in this
Lecture Series data from South Asian languages will be presented. Participants
will be encouraged to test hypotheses and predictions in their own languages.

b. The second focus has to do with the syntax-semantics map. The syntactic
framework adopted in this lecture series utilizes the level of syntax known as
Logical Form. A model-theoretic, truth-conditional semantics interprets these
disambiguated structures.

The Lecture Series will also involve class presentations by the participants
in which they will present their attempts at implementing the concepts
discussed in the lectures to the data from their languages. Evaluation of the
participants will be made on the basis of these presentations.
