Description:

The Department of Linguistics/TESL at California State University, Northridge,
seeks a linguist with a focus in Semantics and Pragmatics. Candidates must
have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or closely related field by August 21, 2018.
Experience teaching courses in linguistics or related discipline is required.
Applicants must demonstrate ability to effectively work with a highly diverse
student population. Ability to develop and teach graduate (MA-level) and
undergraduate courses in linguistics is required. Evidence of teaching
effectiveness is also required.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a viable research agenda and the
potential for publication. Evidence of other scholarly and professional
activities is desirable. Evidence of degree(s) required at time of hire.

The successful candidate will be familiar with descriptive and theoretical
approaches to linguistics, and in addition to teaching an introductory
linguistics course, will be prepared to teach in at least two of the following
areas: bilingualism, computational linguistics, field linguistics, historical
linguistics, language acquisition, languages in contact, linguistic typology,
morphology, psycholinguistics, syntax.

Highly desirable qualifications: Knowledge of or scholarly work within the
framework of cognitive linguistics. Although not required, we encourage
candidates with a knowledge of those languages defined by the U.S. Department
of State as “critical languages” and/or of endangered languages to apply.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must
have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to
work in the United States.

The University seeks individuals who contribute to their chosen discipline
through scholarly activity and share the University’s commitment to teacher
preparation and general education. All faculty are expected to serve on
departmental and/or university committees and to advise students. The standard
teaching load is 12 units (typically four courses) per semester, though
reassigned time for research and curriculum development is available on a
competitive basis. A willingness to teach evening classes is essential. The
successful candidate will teach a variety of courses, and can expect to teach
General Education courses at the baccalaureate level, as well as MA and
undergraduate courses in their field. Publication is required for tenure.
