Description:

The University of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Humanities; Department of
Anglophone Studies, English Linguistics invites applications for a
Postdoctoral research fellowship (50% post).

The postdoctoral fellow will join the newly created Sociolinguistics Lab at
the University of Duisburg-Essen, which explores Variation and Change in the
English Language. 

The successful candidate will develop their own research agenda in the area of
language variation and change / variationist sociolinguistics and be active in
the advancement of ongoing research in the lab. The fellow will publish
independent research as well as collaborate with members of the team in
writing joint publications resulting from ongoing research. The postdoctoral
fellow is expected to participate in applications for third party funding of
new interdisciplinary research projects.

The fellow will teach one course per semester during his or her fellowship (a
maximum of 2 h/week). The annual salary is based on spine point TV-L 13 (50%)
on the German university salary scale.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in (English) Linguistics with a background
in Variationist Sociolinguistics, Sociophonetics and/or Computational
Linguistics. They are expected to have expertise in empirical methods,
including the collection and analysis of linguistic data. The applicant must
have a (near) native competence in English and should have experience in
writing/managing research grants. No knowledge of German is required. 

Applicants should include a statement of interest (letter of motivation), a
description of the research you would like to pursue (5 pages max.), a CV
including a list of publications, a copy of the PhD certificate, and the names
and addresses of two referees. Applicants are also requested to provide two
writing samples (i.e. chapters of the dissertation or academic papers)

Starting date: 01.11.2017 or as soon as possible thereafter

Duration: 38 months

Tenure: 50% post
