CCERBAL 2018 Conference

Translanguaging: Opportunities and Challenges in a Global World

Plenary speakers:

Ofelia García (City University of New York)
Guillaume Gentil (Carleton University)
Danièle Moore (Simon Fraser University)

Venue: Canadian Centre for Studies and Research on Bilingualism and Language
Planning (CCERBAL), Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI),

Bilingual and Multilingual Policies, and much more.

Conference theme: Translanguaging, a construct referring to the complex use of
more than one language as a (combined) resource, has captured the imagination
of researchers, educators, and policy makers around the world. The role of
translanguaging as a linguistic and social practice in family, community,

challenging questions that call for continued discussion.

Call for Papers:

Proposals for oral presentations, posters, workshops, thematic symposia and
round tables addressing the conference theme from multidisciplinary
perspectives (educational, linguistic, social, policy, etc.) are welcome.
Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

- The meaning and evolution of the term translanguaging over time and across
disciplines, and its links with concepts such as plurilingualism and
biliteracy
- The role of translanguaging in bilingual/immersion education, language
teaching and learning, and language assessment
- Translanguaging rules, norms and practices in institutional settings (e.g.
bilingual universities, government institutions, etc.)
- Minority and heritage language maintenance and translanguaging
- Translanguaging in bilingual and multilingual societies around the world
- Language policy and translanguaging
- Translanguaging and family language policy
- Technology and translanguaging.
- Translanguaging and intercomprehension.
- Translanguaging and its interrelationship with other issues and phenomena,
such as code-switching, language contact, diglossia and heteroglossia, mixed
languages, language variation and change, language attrition, language shift,
language loss, bi-/multilingual child language development,
bi-/multilingualism across the lifespan, superdiversity, migration, identity,
globalisation, peace, etc.

Proposals will be accepted until December 15, 2017 online at the following
