Description:

Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong
Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students
in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong's institutions.

The Department of Linguistics and Translation (http://www.cityu.edu.hk/lt),
City University of Hong Kong is now inviting applications for the Scheme. The
Department has an exemplary record of teaching excellence and is
internationally recognized for its world-class research. The QS (Quacquarelli
Symonds) ranking for Linguistics of CityU rose from 47th in 2011 to 26th this
year. CityU becomes the top-ranked university in Hong Kong in Linguistics.
More than 20 faculty members conduct empirically based and theoretically
informed research in the areas of theoretical linguistics, applied
linguistics, intelligent linguistics applications, corpus linguistics,
computational linguistics, empirical linguistics, translation, interpretation,
and translation studies.

Applicants who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the
Department, irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background,
should be eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding
qualities of academic performance, research ability or potential,
communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities. The minimum
academic qualification for the research degree programs is a first-class
honours degree (or the equivalent) or a CGPA over 85 (out of 100). Applicants
whose first language is not English must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550
(paper-based) or 79 (internet-based); or an overall band score of 6.5 in
IELTS, with a minimum of 6 for each of the sub-categories including Listening,
Reading, Writing and Speaking. A research proposal setting out the aims,
outlines, and methods of the proposed research should be submitted with the
application. Shortlisted candidates will be invited by the Department for an
admission interview (either face-to-face or via Skype).

Applicants are required to submit online applications both to the RGC and
CityU. The application deadline is 1 December 2017 (12.00.00 GMT +8 hours).

Each Fellowship recipient will receive a financial award in the amount of USD
105,320 for the 3-year PhD study. The financial award consists of CYC SGS
Entrance Scholarship (which covers the tuition and on-campus hostel fees in
the first year of research study), and a monthly stipend and a conference and
research-related travel allowance. Students with outstanding academic progress
in their later years of study may receive a Research Tuition Scholarship to
cover their tuition fees. 
Firm admission offer with regular postgraduate studentship will be given to
selected CityU’s nominees, even if they are not awarded the Fellowship by the
RGC. The admission offer will be confirmed by the University in January 2018. 

The RGC will notify the successful applicants of the results in March 2018.
