Description:

The University of Macau (UMacau) is the flagship public university in Macao,
which gives it a unique advantage when pursuing the goal of becoming a
world-class university with regional characteristics. English is its working
language. In recent years, the university has made great progress in various
areas, gaining increasing international recognition for its teaching,
research, and community service. To better support higher education
development in Macao and to meet society’s ever-increasing demand for
high-quality professionals, the university relocated in August 2014 to a new
campus of approximately 1.09 square kilometres. With a state-of-the-art
campus, the implementation of Asia’s largest residential college system, the
establishment of new faculties and well-equipped laboratories, the increasing
numbers of students and faculty members recruited from around the world,
UMacau possesses great potential and provides exciting new possibilities for
professional development. 

The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites
applications for the position of Full / Associate / Assistant Professor of
Linguistics in English, preferably specializing in Discourse Analysis
(especially Spoken, Media Discourse and/or Conversation Analysis). The
Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational,
scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English
Studies, focusing on Linguistics and Literary Studies, as well as a Minor
programme in Translation Studies. At the postgraduate level, the Department
offers an MA in English Studies, an MA in Translation Studies, and a new MA in
Second Language Acquisition (delivered with the Departments of Portuguese and
Chinese). There are two PhD areas, in (i) English Literary Studies and (ii)
English Linguistics. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is home to the Centre
for Studies in Translation, Interpreting and Cognition (http://cstic.umac.mo)
and a state-ofthe- art Cognitive Laboratory. The Department also contributes
courses to a General Education programme. The Department of English aims to
recruit staff who will ideally be able to teach and research in the developing
areas of Language and Technology. 

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Linguistics or another related
area, teaching experience at tertiary institutions and a track record of
quality research publications appropriate to any of the ranks of the
Full/Associate/Assistant Professors. Applicants for the position should be
able to demonstrate excellence in teaching at tertiary level, outstanding
research potential, a willingness to provide service to the University, and an
interest in English in the Asian context. Candidates with quality research
publications and teaching experience in Discourse Analysis (especially Spoken,
Media Discourse and/or Conversation Analysis) will be particularly welcome. 

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in as early as January 2018.
Position and Remuneration Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be
competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic
qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local
maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various
