Description:

The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Oulu is announcing an opening
for a Professor of English Philology, and, more specifically, the use,
teaching, and learning of English in the digitalised world, to start on August
1, 2018.
 
Field and Location:
The position is at the Faculty of Humanities, in the Research Unit of
Languages and Literature. 
 
Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the post of a professor include:
- doctoral degree
- high quality of scientific competence
- experience in leading and supervising scientific research
- clear evidence of international collaboration in his or her field of
research
- ability to give high quality education based on research and supervision of
doctoral theses

It will be the duty of the newly appointed Professor of English Philology to
lead research and to foster knowledge and skills, in accordance with the
University of Oulu’s research strategy, and with a focus on English language
in use and the teaching and learning of English in the digitalised world. The
Professor will lead research that enhances the research focus areas of English
Philology. The Professor will also actively seek ways to strengthen
connections and collaboration within the multidisciplinary research community
at the University of Oulu, and with stakeholders in the broader society.

When assessing the applicant’s merits, issues taken into consideration include
scientific publications and other research merits, teaching experience and
pedagogical training. In addition, attention will be paid to the production
and use of teaching materials and learning resources, acquaintance with the
pedagogic use of various technologies, and other teaching merits and
distinctions relevant to the post. 

In addition to this, the merits that will be taken into consideration are the
applicant’s activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity with
the field concerned, success in acquiring supplementary funding, scientific
work abroad, other international activities and leadership and interaction
skills. 

Language proficiency requirements are defined in Government Decree on
Universities (770/2009). For university teaching and research positions in
Finland, a full command of the teaching language, Finnish or Swedish, is
required. However, in English Philology the language used for teaching is
English. Knowledge of and competence in Finnish will be considered a merit. If
the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish, he or she is expected
to acquire moderate proficiency within two years after the selection, as this
is essential for the professor’s duties as well as for integration into the
workplace and Finnish society.
