University or Organization: University of Michigan

Job Location: Michigan, USA

Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Psycholinguistics

Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in phonetics in the
Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. The initial
appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second
year. The successful candidate will work 50% of the time in the lab of
Professor Jelena Krivokapic and 50% in the lab of Professors Patrice Beddor
and Andries Coetzee. Work will involve assisting with all aspects of
conducting the experimental studies associated with both labs (participant
recruitment, preparing and running experiments, post-processing, analysis, and
write-up). Professors Beddor's and Coetzee's research, which is funded in part
by an NSF grant, investigates the relation between speech production and
perception using ultrasound, airflow, and eye-tracking technologies. The
primary responsibility in Professor Krivokapic's lab will be to assist with
all aspects of conducting electromagnetic articulometry (EMA) experiments, and
managing the EMA lab. The department has dual Carstens EMA systems for
studying conversational interaction and speech production in general. In
addition to this work, the researcher may also oversee graduate and
undergraduate students working on projects related to the two labs. The
successful candidate will be encouraged to work on their own research and will
more generally be part of a vibrant research environment that includes faculty
and students in Linguistics, Psychology, and the Weinberg Institute for
Cognitive Science.

A Ph.D. in Linguistics or related discipline is required. Applicants with
expertise in the following laboratory techniques are particularly encouraged
to apply: speech production (preferably with EMA) and perception, high levels
of computational proficiency, and programming expertise. Specific experience
with MATLAB, R, Python, statistical modeling and functional data analysis,
signal processing, and with eye tracking and ultrasound, would be particularly
useful but is not a prerequisite for the position.

A cover letter explaining qualifications for the position, a CV, a research
statement, and one or more representative publications, manuscripts, or
dissertation chapters should be sent to the email address below. Please
arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to that address. Review
of dossiers will begin on April 24th. The (flexible) start date of the
postdoctoral position is July 1st.

Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The University of Michigan is an
equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

Contact information: Patrice Speeter Beddor (beddor at umich.edu), Jelena
